Two weeks ago, we set up camp in our "East 40" (although it is certainly not 40 acres, but it sounds cool) and had ourselves a little staycation. Brad mowed a section out of our long grass, which eventually will be our orchard someday. In the meantime, it makes a perfect site for a couple of tents, a campfire, some lawn chairs, and family fun.

Whittling...
Breakfast for supper - nothing wrong with that!

The campsite...

Watching the day end...

The day was waning, the moon arisin', and the world was settling down for the night. Unfortunately for me, no air mattress in my tent means mom sleeps inside tonight! Being married to a chiropractor is awesome, but I don't like to provide him any extra work if I can avoid it! While I love to camp, I do have my requirements, and an air mattress on the lumpy, bumpy ground is a must. Lo and behold, our big air mattress doesn't fit inside our tent door when it is already blown up, and we didn't have enough cord to run electric to the tent, so, I headed in to our house (and my nice warm bed) while everyone else roughed it outside. It got down to 42 degrees that night as well, so all of them snuggling together in one tent was a great idea! I wouldn't have fit anyway with that sleeping plan!

The next morning, the campers awoke to a gorgeous day, complete with fog over the foothills and the sun peaking through. What a glorious scene to behold prior to heading to church!

Amazingly enough, that was the first time we had our tents out this summer, and hopefully we'll be able to get them out a time or two again yet this fall. All I know, is whether we take a big vacation, or stay at home, when families are together, memories are made!

Well, as usual, I should be doing numerous other things rather than spending time on the computer, but I wanted to share a few pictures and highlights of our wonderful week of family bonding time. A little history - when I was young, my family would head up north to Cohasset, MN. Cohasset is a little town outside of Grand Rapids, MN, and home to Sunset Point Resort on Bass Lake. Every summer, my dad would take a week off from pastoring our church, and we would rent a rustic cabin to get away from it all. We would pray the one phone at the resort would not ring, calling with some emergency to send us all back home. While that did happen a few times, I relished the time that my dad could get away and we could all enjoy a family vacation.

My dad passed away when I was twelve, so some years were spent regrouping - moving, my mom starting a new job, switching schools, etc. But, sporadically through the years, my family would continue to head up to the resort. I seemed to never be able to go due to work obligations or something. But, three years ago, we surprised my mom by all meeting up there for her 60th birthday. We've decided to go back now, year after year, to continue to the tradition. It is such a great opportunity to bring all of our families together - we hang out, drink A LOT of coffee, read books, play games, swim, you name it. We mostly enjoy just being together and bonding.

This year was unique because it was COLD! These are rustic cabins - no tv, no internet access, just the bare essentials which call you to simpler times. Our nights got down to the high 40's, and the first half of the week had highs in the mid 50's. Who would have thought that we would need to have the heat on in the cabins for the first few nights at the beginning of July??? But, we all made the best of it - it didn't rain, so the kids were still out from morning 'til night. They played army, tetherball, tag, capture the flag, eenie einey over, kick the can, built sand castles, baseball, played on swings, read, talked, ate, played inside games, tried to go swimming, froze, and started all over again the next day. They relished the time together and milked it for all it was worth. As adults, we drank coffee, ate, sat, read, played pinnochle, bananagrams, Wizard, 5 crowns, Blokus, talked, ate some more, laughed, and snuggled under blankets. On Thursday and Friday the kids were finally able to get into the COLD water, but enjoyed it despite their blue lips. Being together was all that mattered.

It's only Tuesday, but it feels like we were gone eons ago. Thank goodness for pictures which keep the memories alive - here are a few of my favorites...

Sunday morning church around the campfire - or, actually, a pile of sticks...

Army time...

Girl time...

Wildlife time...

Water and beach time...

And, finally, what would Sunset Point Resort be without sunset pictures?

I am so blessed - to be able to take a vacation, to be with a family who loves the Lord, to be immersed in God's creation each and every day, to experience the beauty of a soaring bald eagle along with the melancholy song of the common loon, and to be surrounded by the love of family. Praise the Lord for all that he has done for me- now, and forevermore!

Hi! We're home after a wonderful week of family bonding! I have so much to write about and share, but digging out from the mountain of laundry is going to have to take precedence. I can't wait to stop by and visit all of you and see what I have missed over the course of the week...but all things take time. Soon, friends, soon!

I'll be back and can't wait to jot down some of my favorite memories. For now, I'm off to nurse my major caffeine withdrawal headache (Wow! The coffee we consumed this past week!!) and finish emptying the bottomless pit of a minivan!

Talk to you soon!

It was a whirlwind day, just as most are before you leave for vacation. Well, at least in my house anyway. It is 10:58pm and I'm off to go pack MY clothes, finally. I think everything else is in order. We are pushing back our 5:00am departure time due to the weather forecast being rain and wind. :( Oh well, we will still find plenty of games to play and enjoy lots of fellowship anyway. My entire family will be there, complete with cousins to play pioneer with, adults to play pinnochle and Shanghai Rummy, and food for everyone to munch. I'm sure I'll have lots to share when we get home, but in the meantime, here's a few pics from years past to show you.

Have a great week!

Brad had a continuing education class last Friday and Saturday so we ventured out with him and spent some rainy days at a new destination. We packed up the school supplies, and took it on the road. Here's where we went:

The town of Scenic - check out the two inhabitants:

Can you guess?

Well, we didn't venture far, but far enough to have a change of scenery. We love the Black Hills so ventured out there again for a few extra days on top of the continuing ed. We were able to do a lot of things, but skipped Mt. Rushmore this time in order to go to the Crazy Horse Memorial - we had just discussed the Battle of Little Big Horn, so this was a fitting field trip.

How about this one? Can you name the movie?

Yep, National Treasure 2!

We packed plenty in despite two full days of rain and cool temps. Brad had two days of education in nutrition, so I'm sure I'll share some of that information in the days to come.

The hour is late, though, and I still haven't had a chance to catch up with all of you. I hope to spend some time doing that tomorrow so I can feel caught up with my blogging family.

Until then, may God bless your day!
